Will the real stars please stand up?
So now we have Plaxico Burress...wide receiver for the NY Giants suspended and facing charges the latest in a rash of NFL players to receive suspension & possible correctional facility time. What is the deal?
I mean O.K. - our.com/watch?v=QdH4NkKzbv4 ).
Where is the rhyme and reason for him and so many other NFL all stars to find hisself in a world of trouble insider scoop on Plaxico is that... <!--more-->this family hero has taken on a great deal in the way of looking out for siblings, wifey & being an all around family leader in the wake of his mother's passing, getting to know papa, and finishing growing up in the NFL...but is that reason to risk a newly signed multi-million dollar contract, a strong career earned by hard work, tenacity, drive & rare talent?? Is it so bad to say - "I've got grown man's bizness that doesn't involve me carrying a gun?? I've worked very hard to become something in life, practiced, studied, passed my SAT's and more. I've sacrificed a lot, skipped parties, skipped girl time, friend time, chill time, I was working when the other guy was chillin...and because of that "I'm into big thangs"...Is it really THAT BAD to just hire a body guard? Is it cool to lose your multi-million dollar contract because you were "representin"?? Representin doesn't have a health plan, no benefits, and no paycheck - just ask "Broke Vick". This post is not out of hate - it is out of heartbreak, because it truly is heartbreaking to watch young brother after young brother who has accomplished so much when they were originally given so little...throw it all away for the sake of what...the cool? (Ode to Lupe Fiasco, check it out: http://www.youtubewhen others are able to evade that trouble everyday?
There are several fellas who are already cool for what they've accomplished in life...the hope of this writer is that Pac Man Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, Michael Vick formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, Chris Henry of the Cincinnati Bengals, Matt Jones of Jacksonville Jaguars...and so many others will tell their friends that when it comes to illicit, illegal activity - that they don't have time for this...they have grown man's business and millions to attend to...
I also hope that the brother who is on his path to greatness...perhaps not yet famous, successful and... ridiculously papered will tell his friends the same thing, that he doesn't have time for this...that he has grown man's business and eventually millions to attend to because the truth is - you do. |

Take the thug out...of the star I agree that it's not entirely the NFL's responsibility to teach them to deal with life but this is not the life that they know or grew up with. This is entirely different. Most of these guys are not far removed from the "hood" and some bring that mind state with them. I look at it like this, when a person gets a DUI the court mandates them to rehab, this follows in the same light. I have a philosophy on why so many fall victim to the streets and I have seen this so many times that to me, its been validated, and that philosophy is that a lot of young brothers don't know what to do, so they do what they know. There needs to be some type of mandatory guidance set up to help these brothas. People in corporate have life coaches and mentors, why is it that because they receive large sums of money to play a sport do we think that they should for some reason just "get it"? Sometimes common sense is not as common as most think. This all makes sense to you and me but this is about the ones that it doesn't make sense to. Suspensions doesn't take away the attitude just the money. |

Vision Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.

It is not the National Football Leagues' job to teach our young men how to deal...so to speak with life, these young men make astronomical amounts of money, and classes are available to them provided both by the league and continuing education courses elsewhere. The illlusion of money will always present the lack of vulnerability or the presumption of invincibility, so they must protect what they have worked to attain. you must understand that with attainment comes estrangement, estrangement from those opportunities, opportunities, and environments that you once vacilated towards. The attainment of money and status affords you new locations and new situations, once you reach the pinnacle of success, you must hang around those who have ascertained some level of success, and not go and return to the places from which you came...simply put haters hate the game and the players too...so they will always try to deny you access, to the old environments, so if they feel that money has chaged you, let them see that maoney has not only chaged you, but rearranged you too...leave behind those things you worked so hard to escape from and live in the now of your success. too many excuses are made for football players and athletes who still go to the club, and sit in VIP, you still have to go through the club to get to that section, and there are the haters waiting and wanting to see you fall, please Plaxico don't be the next VICk-tum. |

big bucks Greg! You are so right!! I agree with your comment. All the NFL does is suspend or fine players when they do something wrong. Along with your "mail room clerk" analogy, these players are also getting paid big bucks. So, what's a ten thousand dollar fine when you have a ten million dollar contract? I think implenting a mentoring or big brother program is the perfect solution... or at least a good attempt to help the NFL's problematic players. |

Big brother
My thing about this whole "thuggery" situation is, what is the NFL doing besides handing out suspensions? I guess what I am saying is that where are the mandatory mentoring programs? Where are the mandatory finance counseling programs. You are taking young brothers out of poverty and thrusting them into a world they have never been involved in. That's like taking a mail room clerk, dressing him up in a suit and tie and expecting him to interact with CEO's in a board meeting. There needs to be programs implemented to help these young brothas out. What about a big brother program for the NFL? Now I know that these people are grown men and you can argue that they should have enough sense not to do a lot of these things and in a perfect world this would be true. This is not a perfect world so instead of suspending the problem, let's look into why is this going on and how can we solve it. The number isn't decreasing, it's growing which means it's becoming an epidemic. We need to quarantine this epidemic and find a vaccine before more young black males are infected. I hope the NFL realizes this and begins the fight towards a resolution.
